From this introduction, one might assume that the pieces contained in Solobook, Volume II are of a highly technical nature. They are. There's enough fast sixteenth note passages and thirty-second note flourishes around the drums, to keep even the most frantic performer happy. Technical challenges abound, but not at the total expense of musical interest, clear phrases, and coherent musical structures. Phrase structures are often so clear (four- or eight-bar units) that they sometimes become predictable. Of particular interest is "Ludi a timpano". The longest solo in the collection, "Lud? contains four short movements. These include a twovoice movement with an ostinatolike passage on the lowest drum, a 'Dance* with a theme that shifts between the meters of 6/8 and 3/4, and a rousing Rondo allegro finale. It is also the only composition in the set that makes use of playing at the normal position and in the center of the head. In addition, this is the only work that contains free-form cadenzas-two of them. The "Sonatine" is another extended composition comprised of four short movements. The second, (Largo) contains an extended recitative that provides ample room for expressive subtleties. The notation of Solobook is quite "cleae. All tuning changes are clearly marked, and dynamics, slurs, articulations, and rolls are all notated with a degree of consistency and clarity that shows the composers intentions.
