			I think this book is great for beginning and intermediate timpanist because it has a good amount of exercises and then a difficult study that follows and really focuses on what the student has just learned. Of course students can practice wrong, but this book is very clear in the instructions and the exercises are in an order which one can improve slightly one step at a time, so basically if the student follows the book correctly they will improve their skill. <br>

It concentrates on the problems of timpani music like time signatures, tunings, and stickings. The beginning discusses phrasing, dampening, tuning, playing legato, etc. Then we turn to section two where there is practicing material for these techniques. “The Exercises will provide technical and coordination development… the Studies are pieces which combine the previous exercises into more interesting and musical experiences. The Etudes are a culmination of all the concepts presented in a manner in which they might appear in the musical repertoire of the orchestra today.” Also, included in the back is a list of repertoire that a professional timpanist may likely encounter.
