===Student Reviews===
The Timpani Tuning book by Mervin Britton is a wonderful book that can help a percussionist have a better understanding of tuning and tuning changes of the timpani. At the start of the book, it goes into great detail about scales, key signatures and setting up on tuning the timpani. After it gives a lot of exercises to practice and work through. For every subject it gives details about what to do and then gives examples. I would suggest this book to a college student who is pursuing as a percussionist.
===Student Reviews===
I found this book to be outstanding. It gives good details about playing snare and the meaning of notes or what’s on the measures from the different tempos to note values. I would suggest this for a first year college student or maybe a junior or senior high school student. This book starts out very easy but gets very difficult the farther you get into it. However, towards the end it switches to teaching a student on how to play the timpani or tympani as its stated in the book. At the very end there is a music vocab at the end that seems very useful to a student.
Dexterity stats out very basic with the first thing as basic stroke exercises with Left and Right hand. The book never gets difficult. I would suggest this book for a middle school or younger student maybe a high school student that’s first starting out and has no percussion background. This book is too basic for a college student and is missing a lot of information on how to hold the sticks or even the basics of an actual snare drum instruments. Also this book has no dynamic markings. It lets the student assume what dynamics to use. So a teacher is needed to help the student.
Future Sounds is an excellent book to practice from. It is full of grooves and lots of exercises. The first section focuses on teaching on how to play the drum set and explaining each instrument on a set. Even though it doesn’t go over a set up chart or display its still good that it explains the instruments. After, it gets into basic exercises to get a student going and also has a lot of stickings already written out. This book is very useful to have because it can be a teaching tool and great for just warm-ups and exercises.
I would highly suggest Drum Set Reading for a percussionist learning drum set or wanting to know how to read drum set music. This book starts with the basics of drumming from a few rudiments, solo development and how to hit or strike cymbals. Also it goes over counting and different patterns like a jazz waltz, rock, and shuffle pattern. This book lacks dynamics though and it could go over an actual drum set on how to strike the drum heads and maybe on how to set up a drum set.
4-Mallet study is a really great book. I personally wouldn’t teach anyone new to mallets though. This seems more of an intermediate text. The book can get very challenging but it will really help with someone who has not mastered 4-mallet independence yet. I would suggest this book for a college student to have in their library. It contains a lot of different Etude’s that could be short fun pieces to learn for studies or warm-ups. I really enjoyed this book.
===Student Reviews===
This book is just marvelous. I would highly suggest getting this book and teaching from it. It shows and demonstrates the Musser Grip and the Cross Grip. Then it starts with simple exercises to get the four mallet movement going. After a while the exercises start to become more difficult and longer. However, I wish that this book had some dynamics to help with volume control or switching between different dynamics. This book doesn’t get too difficult for a marimba player but for someone who knows more then basics, I believe that this book would be excellent for sight reading and exercises. I really loved this book.
== Overview ==
Dahlgren, Marvin. ''4-Way Coordination.'' New York: Henry Adler Incorporated, 1963.
This book slowly breaks down how to make each hand and each foot independent on the drum set. Frist he starts out with melodic coordination meaning only one hand or one foot is being played at a time. It starts out with eighth notes, moves on to triplets, and then combines the two. The rest of the book is set up like this as he moves on to harmonic and 4-way coordination. Harmonic only plays two notes at a time which could be: both hands, both feet, or one hand and one foot. 4-way is meant to be played on a drum set and the notes indicate if you should hit a cymbal, hi-hat, or drum.
===Student Reviews===
I think this book is very useful in learning to play drum set, especially if the main goal is to play both hands and both feet individually. It breaks it down step by step and the exercises are very useful to play with a metronome. If someone were to follow the directions in this book I have no doubt that they would successfully make each hand and foot independent by the end. It may be an old book, but it’s still very useful.

4-Way Coordination is a great warm up book for learning or perfecting coordination control with the drum set. The book starts out explaining how to coordinate with both hands and feet on the drum set. Its great because it doesn’t tell you what drums or cymbals to hit. Instead it gives you patterns to play using both hands and feet only. However, after going through the basics the book starts adding ride cymbal and hi-hat coordination. Starts getting the reader or student used to reading drum set music. I believe that this book is pretty great and useful to study from! I would suggest this for any percussionist that has some kind of basic background of drum set.
===Student Reviews===
