			Michael Barkl was born in Sydney in 1958 and studied composition at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music from 1977 to 1980. He proceeded with postgraduate studies in composition at the University of New England (1981-1984), and musicology at Deakin University (1986-1994) where he was awarded the PhD for research into Australian music.

			He received fellowships to the National Young Composers School for Orchestral Composition in 1982, 1983 and 1985, and to the National Music Camp in 1985. His work was highly commended in the 1981 International Valentino Bucchi Prize in Italy, the 1985 University of Wollongong Prize for a Piano Work, and the 1988 Jazz Action Society Big Band Composition Competition.

			In 1986 Michael Barkl was composer in residence for the City of Orange, where he composed music for community use and for public occasions. In 1988 he was invited to the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris for a performance of his chamber work Ballade by the Ensemble InterContemporain.

			Michael Barkl's works, which investigate the interplay of modernist and popular materials, have been performed by Michael Harvey, Sally Mays, James Wishart, Ariel, Elision, the Seymour Group, the Song Company, Synergy, and the Adelaide, Tasmanian and Western Australian Symphony Orchestras.

			In recent years Barkl has been involved with electronic music, completing a doctor of creative arts in this area at the University of Wollongong in 2009<ref>http://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/artist/barkl-michael</ref>
