Program Notes
Hanging Around is a play on the name of the student for whom I wroteot (Kevin Hanger), and includes a lot of the musical and technical concepts he was learning at the time. Teaching methods aside, the music of Hanging Around is a blend of 1980s synth rock and modern epic film music, complete with killer drum grooves and a wailing guitar solo
Performance Notes
Hanging Around features melodies in both the treble and bas clef, mainly moving stepwise from one note to a neighboring note within a small range, framed within two key rhythmic ideas. The rolled passage at letter "C" offers players practice playing legato phrases, with no shift greater than a third. Player can learn the piece quickly and the backing track, a fusion of 80s synth rock and current epic cinematic music, contains enough details to keep them interested throughout repeated practice. For ensemble performance, the piece includes an optional drum set part for one or more novice drummers. The Chief challenge here is to groove solidly and not to overplay.
